The bees of ONS BUITEN are in good hands of beekeeper Miranda. At the moment she is busy creating space for a safe balance between humans and bees. She tells us what is involved.

Miranda: “We are looking for a new place for the existing hives of ONS BUITEN. The current location of the bees is no longer safe for humans due to the changes in the nature development site. The bees could come too often, too close. For example, if they accidentally fly into someone's hair, they would sting out of fear. A safe distance from all guests and the team is therefore important.

At the same time, we want to keep them in view, so that this season we can take guests on an exploration into the fascinating and important world of bees. Information transfer and awareness help to strengthen the balance between people, nature and the environment.

If we want to continue to use the current beehives, we would be limited to a maximum radius of 50 meters. Bees are very attached to their place and if the hives were moved further, the bees would get lost and confused. They would return to the old location of the closet, which would no longer be there.

Fortunately, I also have beehives in other natural places on Walcheren. That's why I'm doing a big move between the bee colonies of ONS BUITEN and neighboring colonies, about 3 km away. The move may only take place if the temperature is above 15 degrees. So it's important to keep an eye on the weather forecast and plan well."
