Planting and seeding in March
14 maart 2025
March is the perfect month to plant fruit trees, so that is exactly what we are doing at ONS BUITEN.`
Scattered around the grounds, new thornless blackberry and raspberry bushes have been planted. Today we began planting around the entrance to the property. Here we are planting two different varieties of quince trees, a forgotten fruit that actually deserves much more attention. The quince has numerous wonderful qualities: from the fragrant flowers to the robust fruit that is suitable for jams, jellies and can even be used in savory dishes.
The role of the willow
A big role here is played by the willow, which we plant with every new fruit tree. The willow helps the fruit trees root well in the sometimes firm soil. This is due to a substance that it gives off, which helps the fruit tree make new roots faster. In addition, this fast grower provides fine shade for the fruit trees, giving them some protection during the hot summer days. Is the shade too much? Then we prune the willows in the summer and use the shredded trimmings as mulch under the fruit trees. This way the willow feeds the fruit tree and the soil stays healthy.
Native flowers
In between the new plantings, open spots in the ground often occur, for example at tree plantings. These spots will now be sown with a native flower mixture. The flowers will soon provide not only a colorful and lively image, but they will also contribute to a healthy ecosystem on the grounds. For example, you will soon be looking out at the flowers from your tent in the summer ???
