veggie highway

The construction of a vegetable garden has started according to the method of the so-called no-dig market garden.

It is a method with which vegetables are grown very intensively on a very small surface, often even several crops per season. We are building a 'market street'; a long strip near the greenhouse, surrounded by herbs and the ONS BUITEN 'mascot plant' KARDOEN.

Cultivation is done in a thick layer of compost, whereby often the first layer of cardboard is placed on the substrate in order to suppress uncontrolled growth . Everything is further optimized with hand tools and small machinery.

At ONS BUITEN, different types of vegetables with different growth rates have been sown together. The intention is that the entire bed is covered quickly, leaving no room for unwanted plants (formerly known as 'weeds'). Connoisseur Jos Willemsen and his team first harvest the fast-growing varieties, such as radishes, after which more and more space is created for the slower varieties.

In addition to radishes, pole beans, beets, fennel, carrots and palm cabbage are also sown. With organic seeds from De Bolster. More about the harvest later in the season.
