Wadi
24 april 2024
In March and April, the difference between the areas on our property where wadis have already been created and the areas where this has not yet happened was clearly visible.
The spring was very wet and yet the sites near the wadis were fully usable and dry. The sites without wadis nearby were wetter and some sites were even too soft to be used with motorhomes or caravans.
A wadi is a kind of pond. A deeper area into which all the water can flow. When it is dry, these wadis are empty, and when it is very wet (for a while), they are filled with rainwater.
Because the water can drain away, the pitches remain dry. This benefits not only the camper, but also nature. The collected water is a place full of life. Small and large animals come there. Even if it has been dry for a while and the water has slowly receded into the ground. Even when you can no longer see any water, the ground is still moist. As a result, other plant species grow in and around the wadi, which in turn attract other creatures such as dragonflies and aquatic insects.
The pitches in the ZUID area, in the WEST edge area and along some paths in the NOORD and OOST areas have been redesigned in recent years.
These places are slightly sloping. This allows the water to flow easily towards the wadis, and overall you can see the gently sloping landscape that used to be so typical everywhere in Zeeland, and as we see for example in the Verdronken Land van Saeftinghe.
