Oranjezon Water Catchment Area

A splendid nature reserve

The area gained its name from the Earls of Nassau, later the Princes of Orange. It is, however, much more than just a splendid nature reserve where you can go for wonderful walks: in 1889, the municipality of Middelburg bought part of this dune area to extract clean drinking water. This stopped in 1995, but in case of an emergency, Oranjezon can supply the entire island of Walcheren with clean drinking water within 24 hours.
