VLISSINGEN

Gigantic freight ships

As early as in the 13th century, the port of Vlissingen was thriving thanks to the trade in hides and pelts, salt, herring, tar, and wool. During this same period, it was, however, also notorious for privateering and piracy. The outer port, built in 1455, is now used for pilot vessels and is the oldest port of Vlissingen. There are loads of cultural and informative things to do around the port area. Enter the world of Dutch marine legends in Zeeuws Maritieme Museum or watch the gigantic container ships that sail closely along the beach.
