Walcheren Canal

Connecting the Westerschelde and Lake Veere

This canal with a length of 14.5 kilometres was dug by manual labour around 1870. There were no excavators yet at the time, so most of the digging was done by labourers, who were also known as the ‘Polder guys’. The canal is a waterway between the Westerschelde and the Lake Veere.
