WESTKAPELSE KREEK

See the creek from a unique viewing point.

Walcheren saw its share of action during World War II. In 1944, for instance, the Allied forces bombed the Westkapelle seawall to flood the island. This is called ‘inundation’. The flows of seawater streaming in and out created the Westkapelse Kreek. Rumour has it that there is still a WWII landing craft lying on the bottom of this creek. You can see the creek from a unique viewpoint: the Westkapelle Lighthouse which is still active and open to the public who can climb to its rooftop.
